FINANCE | Prompt grant obtained |
October 2009 - Newly awarded grant: a research grant from Prompt's "Green Information Communication Technology (ICT)" program was awarded to Professor Claude Thibeault (ÉTS). Entitled "Methodology and Platform for Power Efficient Wireless DSP Algorithm Implementations", this 2 year-long project will allow COMunity to add power consumption to metrics considered in telecommunication algorithm implementation.
This project will leverage the OPERA project during which an environment for early execution time and memory consumption estimation was developed. Finally, this project is not only collaboration between Professors Claude Thibeault, François Gagnon and Yvon Savaria
(Polytechnique) - our industrial partner, Octasic, will also contribute. Engineers from the latter will take part in the establishment of a test bench for the validation of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard as well as in performance evaluation in terms of power consumption.

ULTRA CHAIR | Poster Session
|
November 3rd, 2009 - Chair’s students and professionals moved in Ultra-electronics TCS’ cafeteria for the second annual poster session. In addition to the now traditional posters, a few also showed demos of their work. In this case, Samuel Gagné, master student, demonstrated a Matlab application of his Master’s project named “Spectrum listening : context strategy”. Christian Talbot, research professional, showed the first LTCC elements detailing fabrication steps. Finally, Laurent Mouysset, research professional, erected a test bench for scenario generation using LACIME’s channel simulator. The test bench allows for precise testing of communication system performances.
The event, initially scheduled for an hour and a half, lasted two hours and a half because of the entense interaction between Ultra's engineers and the students.

September 8th, 2009 -The patent "Process and system for encoding and playback of stereoscopic video sequence", invented by Nicholas Routhier, Claude Thibeault, Jean Belzile, Daniel Malouin, Pierre-Paul Carpentier, Martin Dallaire, has been the object of a article in the Newspaper La Presse (see article, French only). A press release had been submitted by Sensio in August (see press release).
November 5th, 2009 - In June, Prof. Gagnon was interviewed for a television program, "Club Social", on the notion of technological fatigue. This show was broadcasted on TV5 Canada on November 5th at 8 PM.

CONFERENCE & SUMMER BBQ | Arts & Technology
|
| |
July 9th 2009- As a follow up on the Arts and technology meeting, it is on the outdoor park of the student residences that the participants continued their discussions over BBQ and friendly beach volleyball matches. Professor and multidisciplinary artist, Jean Dubois, UQAM, and his team have joined LACIME members for this event. A strong interest was shown from the possible collaboration on research projects which would combine arts and technology. The following talks were given to initiate collaboration opportunities: "Présentation des travaux récents du groupe de recherche-création Interstices", by Pr. J. Dubois, "La science du mouvement: MOCAP et interactivité", by M. O. Munger, and a short talk by Prof. Gagnon on COMunity’s research activities. |

Novembre 2009 - LTCC Technology (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics) (learn more about this) multi-layer technology which can integrated circuits and 3D passives structures on ceramic substrate. This high density integration
technology and can also included RF devices and microelectronic die. This unique Canadian infrastructure is in process of being
characterized to become accessible nationwide. In the meantime, Christian Talbot has started the LTCC device fabrication, the purpose is to define and
optimize the design fabrication process. We wish to reach the high resolution and performances of the US and European LTCC fabrication facilities.
A design guide will soon be available for industry and university partnerships.
